Our 2014 Leo's Pride is a Commemorative Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon honoring the late Leo Trentadue. The conceptional Lion's head on the label is a link to the more than dozen lion sculptures on the Estate.
Leo had a reputation for being innovative and was among the very first to plant new vines in Sonoma County since the days of Prohibition. Understanding the importance of growing specific grape varieties, Leo planted half-acre blocks to eight different varietals in 1974. These were the varietals that would eventually make incredible world class wines from the Estate.
Today there are just under 11 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the Estate and in 2014 they produced just 28 tons of grapes. With Leo's passing in January 2014, the decision was made to produce a special wine that would commemorate Leo's accomplishments and embody Leo's Pride. Never before had that been done, and to this date it may not happen again.
This very rare and incredibly limited wine is being initially released only to Trentadue Wine Club members. A portion of the wine will be held and aged in our cellars to be released at a later date. The current offering will most certainly sell out so if you want to share and enjoy this remarkable wine and the history it represents, we recommend you order yours today.
The grapes for this wine were harvested the last week of September 2014. After de-stemming and cold soaking for 5 days, the grapes were fermented using native and 'designer' yeast for an average of 10 days. Post fermentation, all lots were put through an extended maceration for another 21 days which further concentrated the rich flavors and enhanced the silky tannins.
After one year in 100% new French Oak, just 8 of the best barrels were selected for this wine. It was aged for a total of 28 months, and has a dense ruby-purple color and abundant aromas of blueberries, blackberry and black licorice with a hint of herbs and ripe olive. The long aging process in new oak barrels contributes to aromas of vanilla and cocoa dust. The mouth feel is dense and lush, with balanced acidity and soft tannins. Drink now or age for 5-7 years.
